There is one day a year when all Americans stay at home with their families and eat a big dinner. This is Thanksgiving Day.
The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in 1621. They
sailed to America
on board the "Mayflower" ship for religious freedom. They were among
the first European settlers in America.
They settled in what is now known as
the state of Massachusetts.
The following spring the Indians taught the
pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant and survive in America. The crops did well and
in the fall of 1621 pilgrims had a great harvest.
They were thankful and decided to celebrate
with a Thanksgiving feast. The famous First thanksgiving feast was a gesture to
thank God to help them survive the bitter winter.
George Washington proclaimed a National Day of thanksgiving in 1789. In 1863, after the Civil war, President Linkoln suggested the last Thursday in November to be a national day of Thanksgiving.
On Thanksgiving
Day, family members gather at the house of an older relative, even if they live
far away. All give thanks for everything
good they have. Charitable organizations offer traditional meal to the
homeless.
For centuries, 'Thanksgiving Day' is associated with
communal prayers in church and in homes
It is also a day to show gratitude to your friends and
relatives for all the good deeds.
The pupils of the 5th form had an opportunity to discover the history of this holiday, find new interesting facts about its customs and traditions, discuss this information with friends. We also watched the presentations, and solved some riddles, and did some interesting tasks about it.
I can conclude, that children liked this competition. The winners got some sweet prizes.
